Accessibility

Good light,
for everyone.

We want every visitor to find and enjoy the right lamp, however they browse. Here is what we do, where we're still improving, and how to reach us if anything gets in your way.

Our commitment

Avelby is committed to making our website usable for everyone, including people who use screen readers, keyboards, magnification or other assistive technology.

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA, the standard the U.S. Department of Justice and the courts look to for websites under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Accessibility is ongoing work, and we keep improving as our store grows.

What we do

As we design and build our store, we work to:

  • describe every product photo in text, and hide purely decorative images from screen readers
  • give buttons, links and form fields clear names that assistive technology can read
  • structure pages with headings and landmarks, and set the page language for screen readers
  • keep text readable, with enough contrast against its background
  • offer a Skip to content link, and move the keyboard's focus into menus, panels and windows when they open and back when they close
  • never block zooming, so pages can be enlarged on any device
  • give the details that matter in text, such as dimensions, materials, bulbs and delivery times, not only in images

How we keep improving

We test our pages with automated WCAG checks and with a keyboard, and we fix the barriers we find or that our customers tell us about. We review this statement whenever our website changes in a meaningful way.

Known limitations

Despite our efforts, some parts of our website may not be fully accessible yet. Here is what we know of, and what we're doing about it:

  • Supplier photos with text. Some product photos include measurements or diagrams as part of the image. The same details are always in the product page's text, under Dimensions and Specifications.
  • Moving and swiping content. Some sections show photos and products in carousels that you can swipe. We are improving how they work with a keyboard and screen readers.
  • Services from other companies. Payment fields at checkout are provided by Stripe, and sign-in with Google by Google. They run their own accessibility programs, and while we choose partners that take accessibility seriously, we can't fully control their content.

Help with your order

If any part of our website makes it hard for you to shop, we're happy to help another way. Email us, and we will describe a lamp in detail, send you its information in a format that works for you, help you choose, and place your order with you, at the same prices and with the same offers as on our website.

Tell us about a barrier

If you come across anything that is hard to use, please email us at support@avelby.com. It helps us to know:

  • the page's address or the product's name
  • what you were trying to do, and what happened
  • the device, browser and any assistive technology you use, if you would like to share them

We reply within 2 business days, let you know how we will fix the issue, and help you in the meantime.

Browsers and assistive technology

Our website is built to work with recent versions of Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox, on computers and on phones, and with the screen readers built into them, such as VoiceOver, TalkBack and Narrator, as well as NVDA and JAWS. Older browsers may not show every page as intended.
