Privacy Policy

Your details,
in good hands.

We collect only what we need to bring your lamps home, and we never sell it. Here is exactly what we keep, why we keep it, and how you stay in control.

Who we are

Avelby is an online lighting store for customers in the United States. This policy explains what personal information we collect when you visit our website, shop with us or write to us, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have.

Wherever it says "we" or "us", it means Avelby.

What we collect

We collect information you give us and a little that your browser sends us:

  • Your orders. Your name, email, phone number and shipping address, the lamps you buy, and the details of their payment and delivery.
  • Your account. Your email, name, saved addresses and wishlist, and your password, which we store only in a securely hashed form. If you sign in with Google, we receive your name and email from Google.
  • Payments. You enter your card directly with Stripe, our payment processor. We never see or store your full card number.
  • Your messages. What you send our team, such as your name, email, order number and message, and any return, cancellation or issue request.
  • Your reviews. If you review a lamp, we show your rating, review and photos with your first name and last initial. We use your email and order number only to confirm you bought it, and we remove the location and other details stored inside your photos.
  • Your preferences. Whether you would like to hear from us with news and offers by email or by text.
  • Technical data. Like most websites, our hosting provider records basic information such as your IP address, browser and the pages you open, to keep the site secure and working. It also works out your approximate city from your IP address, so a product page can show free delivery to your area; we use it only for that and never store it.
  • Advertising data. Unless you opt out, Google's advertising tag on our website records the pages you visit, what you search for, the lamps you look at and add to or remove from your cart, how far you get at checkout, whether you arrived from one of our Google ads, and whether you went on to buy, with the order's value and lamps, using cookies and identifiers on your device. When you buy, it also sends Google your email in a scrambled (hashed) form, so Google can match the purchase to an ad you saw.

How we use it

We use your information only to run the store and look after you:

  • to prepare, ship and deliver your order, and to email you its confirmation and tracking
  • to handle returns, exchanges, cancellations and refunds
  • to answer your questions and help with any issue
  • to run your account and keep you signed in
  • to prevent fraud and keep the store secure
  • to send you news and offers, only if you asked for them
  • to see how visitors use our store through Google Analytics, which of our Google ads lead to a purchase, and to show our lamps in Google ads to you and to people likely to want them, unless you opt out
  • to meet our legal, tax and accounting obligations

We don't sell your personal information for money. Our use of Google Ads and Google Analytics is what some state laws call "sharing" it for targeted advertising, and you can opt out of it at any time on our Your Privacy Choices page, linked at the bottom of every page.

Who we share it with

We share only what is needed, and only with companies that help us run the store. They may use it only to provide their service to us.

  • Fulfillment partners and carriers receive your name, shipping address and phone number to prepare and deliver your lamps.
  • Stripe processes your payment and helps prevent fraud.
  • Google when you choose to sign in with your Google account and, unless you opt out, through its tag for Google Ads and Google Analytics, to measure our ads and our store. Google's own privacy policy covers how it uses that data.
  • Our hosting and database providers store and serve the site and its data securely for us.
  • Our email and text message providers send our order updates and, only if you asked for them, our news and offers.

Some of our fulfillment partners are based outside the U.S., where many of our lamps ship from, so your shipping details may be handled there too. They receive only what they need to deliver your order.

Text messages: mobile opt-in data and consent will not be sold or shared with third parties or affiliates for their marketing or promotional purposes.

We may also share information when the law requires it, to protect our customers or our rights, or with a buyer if Avelby is ever sold or merged, under this same policy.

Cookies and local storage

We use the cookies the store needs to work and, unless you opt out, Google's cookies to measure our ads and our store. We don't use any other advertising or analytics tools.

  • avelby_session keeps you signed in to your account, for up to 30 days, and is removed when you sign out.
  • avelby_google_sign_in protects a sign-in with Google, and expires after 10 minutes.
  • Stripe's cookies are set at checkout to process your payment securely and prevent fraud.
  • Google's cookies such as _gcl_au remember whether you arrived from one of our ads and bought something, for up to 90 days, and _ga tells one visit from another in Google Analytics, for up to two years. They are not set, and any already in your browser are removed, if you opt out or your browser sends Global Privacy Control.
  • Local storage. Your cart, wishlist, recent searches, recently viewed lamps and your privacy choice are saved in your own browser, not on our servers. Once you sign in, your wishlist is saved to your account too. Clearing your browser's site data removes them.

Global Privacy Control: if your browser sends this signal, we treat it as your request to opt out of sharing for targeted advertising, and Google's tag doesn't load. Do Not Track has no agreed meaning, so we don't respond to it.

To opt out, use our Your Privacy Choices page, linked at the bottom of every page. Your choice is saved in that browser, so make it again on each browser or device you use, or after clearing your browser's site data.

How long we keep it

We keep your order and payment records for as long as tax and accounting laws require, usually up to seven years. We keep your account until you delete it, and your messages for as long as we need them to help you. After that, we delete your information or make it anonymous.

Your rights and choices

Wherever you live in the U.S., you can ask us to:

  • tell you what personal information we hold about you, and send you a copy
  • correct anything that is inaccurate
  • delete your information and your account
  • stop sharing your information for targeted advertising: use our Your Privacy Choices page, or turn on Global Privacy Control in your browser
  • stop sending you news and offers: use the unsubscribe link in any email, or reply STOP to any text

To make a request, email us at support@avelby.com from the address you use with Avelby. We will confirm it's you and reply within 45 days. If we can't fully agree to a request, we will tell you why, and you can ask us to look at it again. We will never treat you differently for using your rights.

If you live in Nevada, you may also ask us not to sell your personal information. We already never sell it, but you are welcome to send the request to the same email.

California residents

Under the California Consumer Privacy Act, you have the rights above, and the right to know what we collected over the past 12 months:

  • Identifiers such as your name, email, phone number and address, from you.
  • Commercial information such as the lamps you bought and your returns, from your orders.
  • Internet activity such as your IP address and browser, from your device.

We use them for the purposes in How we use it, and disclose them only to the companies in Who we share it with. We have not sold personal information. Unless you opt out, we share identifiers, commercial information and internet activity with Google for cross-context behavioral advertising, to measure our ads; you can opt out on our Your Privacy Choices page or with Global Privacy Control. We don't knowingly sell or share the information of anyone under 16, and we don't use sensitive personal information to infer anything about you. You may also send a request through an authorized agent, who must show us your signed permission.

Email offers: when you sign up for our emails, we may give you a discount, such as 10% off your first order. Under California law this is a financial incentive. You join by entering your email, you can leave at any time with the unsubscribe link, and we value your email at the amount of the discount.

We don't share personal information with other companies for their own direct marketing.

How we keep it safe

Every page of our store is sent over an encrypted connection. Passwords are stored only in a hashed form, card details stay with Stripe, and only the people who need your information to help you can see it. No system is perfectly secure, but we work hard to protect what you trust us with.

Children

Our store is not meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has given us their details, write to us and we will delete them.

Changes to this policy

When we change this policy, we update the date at the top of this page. If a change matters to how we use your information, we will tell you by email or with a notice on our website before it takes effect.
